When we started 35 years ago, there were about 100 breweries in the United States. How are you able to compete with all those brands and sort of, you know, stick out from the crowd?ĭAN KENARY: Yeah, that's the $1 million question. There's only so much shelf at the supermarket- shelf space. I think there are something like 7,000 brewers in the country right now. So that's a model that I think is only going to continue to grow.ĪLEXIS CHRISTOFOROUS: You know, I don't have to tell you that it's a very crowded space, the craft beer space. The retailers support them, and the consumers like them. And they, very wisely, worked within that system to get, you know, relationship with local stores to work through the system. That's just going to keep growing.Īnd the interesting thing about Drizly- you know, we're in a three-tier system that is heavily regulated by each state. It's been really important during COVID, and that's not going away. But e-commerce, home delivery- you know, we got into that business ourselves with delivery service. My sons went to high school with the founder of Drizly, who's a happy man these days. Great question, Brooke, and it's a great- it's local company. How important has Drizly been over the past year, as you quickly had to pivot?ĭAN KENARY: Absolutely. And Dan, on that note, Drizly, recently acquired by Uber, is one of the ways that consumers can get your beers near them. So we somewhat made it up in the off-premise what we lost in the bar and restaurant side of the business.ĪLEXIS CHRISTOFOROUS: I want to bring in Yahoo Finance's Brooke DiPalma, who is going to join us for this conversation. We were very lucky that the off-premise came back because on-premise, as everybody knows, has either been shut down or reduced by 2/3 or 3/4 of normal. People were at home a lot, and they wanted to drink, and especially when some of the fed- the government support came in and people felt they could afford to spend that. What parts were those?ĭAN KENARY: The off-premise, you know, it came roaring back starting late last spring. I know that it was a tough year, but Harpoon was still able to experience growth in certain parts of the business.
